Welcome to this week’s “Lotto Matrix,” a weekly Friday compilation of the lottery industry’s most significant, interesting, or absurd happenings.
IGT investments
The lottery industry is undergoing a transformation driven by new strategies and technologies aimed at modernizing the retail experience. IGT, a veteran in the lottery and gaming spaces, has developed a range of integrated retail and digital solutions to enhance lottery sales and optimize operations. According to IGT’s CEO Renato Ascoli, these innovations are driven by consumer insights and aim to streamline the entire lottery process, from product distribution to player engagement.
A significant focus, according to Ascoli, is on adapting to changing retail environments and consumer behavior. IGT’s solutions, such as terminals, self-service kiosks, and mobile options, are designed to provide flexibility for both retailers and players. The company’s Connected Play solution, for example, digitalizes the lottery experience and offers personalized marketing based on player behavior.
IGT’s investments in data-driven technologies are also crucial. Tools like the Lottery Data Cloud (LDC) and Retail Market Insights (RMI) provide lotteries with advanced analytics to optimize performance and identify growth opportunities. These tools enable lotteries to analyze sales trends and improve distribution strategies, such as pinpointing ideal vending machine locations.
Game innovation is another pillar of IGT’s strategy. Its Cash Pop game has been successful in multiple U.S. jurisdictions, and the company continues to introduce new game mechanics, such as the Infinity Instants digital printing platform.
Looking ahead, IGT plans to further invest in retail solutions, including a new vending machine and enhanced self-service options. With the upcoming separation of its lottery business, carving out the lottery opportunity from its gaming and digital businesses, IGT aims to become more agile in the lottery industry.
NJ Lottery reinforces RG message
The New Jersey Lottery has initiated its annual “Not 18 Yet? No Bet” awareness campaign to emphasize the state’s firm stance against underage gambling. This initiative serves as a reminder to both residents and retailers that the sale of lottery tickets to anyone under the age of 18 is strictly prohibited. By reinforcing this message, the campaign aims to reduce instances of underage gambling, ensuring compliance with the state’s laws.
This year’s campaign introduces fresh public service announcements aimed at the community, which will be displayed at minor league baseball games throughout the state, including at contests for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws and Trenton Thunder.
A significant aspect of this initiative is the collaboration between the New Jersey Lottery and the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ). Together, they work to promote responsible gaming practices, raising awareness about the potential dangers of early exposure to gambling. The campaign includes outreach to schools, community groups, and retailers.
One’s not enough
Two years after winning $1 million, a South Carolina woman hit the jackpot again, winning $300,000 in the South Carolina Lottery. The woman, who has chosen to stay anonymous, shared with lottery officials that while her first win was an incredible surprise, the second one was even more unexpected.
According to the South Carolina Education Lottery, the woman beat odds of 1 in 700,000 to win the $300,000 prize in the $300,000 Gold Rush game. There are still two top prizes left to be claimed.
Interestingly, the woman’s second win occurred in the same way as her first. As she was on her way to work, she stopped at a local convenience store and purchased a $10 $300,000 Gold Rush ticket. After she got to work, she scratched off the ticket, revealing the top prize, and then tucked it safely into her purse. She didn’t cash it in until the following morning.
Scratch-offs pay big in Florida
Florida is churning out big winners. The Florida Lottery recently announced two $1 million winners from different scratch-off games.
Soignese Youte, a resident of Miramar, won the top prize in the $5 MONOPOLY DOUBLER game and chose a lump-sum payout of $798,985. She bought her ticket at Le Phare Food Market in North Miami Beach.
In another win, Mary Curatolo from Haines City landed a $1 million prize after buying a $20 $5,000,000 TRIPLE MATCH scratch-off. She also opted for a lump-sum payment, taking home $664,198. Her winning ticket was purchased at a Publix in Haines City.
Scientific Games Boosts Lottery Sales in Colorado
Scientific Games has introduced its SCiQ lottery solution across Colorado, as part of a retail program with the Colorado Lottery. This system, designed to optimize retail operations, has significantly increased scratch game sales by up to 13.7% at participating retail chains since its installation.
SCiQ is a technology for managing lottery sales in stores, offering a range of advanced features. These include integrated digital menu boards for modern product displays, automated inventory tracking, real-time sales reports tailored to individual stores, and enhanced security for lottery products.
The rollout is part of a broader effort by Scientific Games and the Colorado Lottery to modernize the way scratch games are sold. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, sales from Colorado Lottery scratch tickets reached over $588 million, generating substantial funding for various programs across the state.
SCiQ installations have already been completed at major retail chains like Circle K and Kroger, as well as at independent retailers across the state. A pilot program with Walmart Neighborhood Market is also underway.
Scientific Games is also expanding this retail modernization initiative beyond Colorado. SCiQ installations have been completed or are in progress in Arizona, Kansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other states. Plans are also in place to introduce SCiQ in two additional unnamed states sometime this year.
