Lotto.com expanded its digital lottery courier services to Massachusetts effective Thursday morning, bringing the number of jurisdictions where the company is operating to 11.
The arrival of the platform in the Commonwealth marks the first time Massachusetts residents will be able to play digital scratch offerings.
And all this is occurring in the 50th anniversary year of scratch tickets being both invented and launched in Massachusetts.
“We are thrilled to launch in Massachusetts, the best performing lottery per capita in the country,” said Thomas Metzger, CEO of Lotto.com Inc., in a press release. “We also look forward to bringing incremental funding to the communities across the Commonwealth that the Lottery supports.”
Before the launch in Massachusetts, Lotto.com operated in 10 states, with a customer base of 2.2 million lottery players. The company has contributed about $120 million to state-funded lottery programs.
Unrestricted aid
In Massachusetts, the state lottery creates unrestricted local aid for the cities and towns of the Commonwealth. Unlike many other states, the funds are not earmarked for any specific programs, and it allows the individual cities and towns to determine how they want to use the money. Examples include public safety staffing and equipment, snow removal, local road improvements, school services, programs for seniors, and more.
In 2023 alone, the Massachusetts Lottery returned a record $1.2 billion in net profit to the Commonwealth for distribution of unrestricted local aid to the 351 towns and cities in Massachusetts. That number is expected to grow with the addition of Lotto.com to the menu.
In addition to the first-in-the-state digital scratch offerings, players in Massachusetts can order state lottery tickets on Lotto.com for nationwide games including Powerball and Mega Millions, both of which frequently advertise jackpots in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Lotto.com now offers draw games to customers in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas, with plans to expand into more states in the near future. Additionally, digital scratch tickets are currently available in Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas.
The two main competitors to Lotto.com in the digital courier space, Jackpocket and Jackpot.com, both operate in Massachusetts already.
Lotto.com Inc., headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, describes itself as a “lottery courier enabling user participation in U.S. State Lotteries.” The company’s stated mission is to help lotteries contribute incremental funds to state-run programs across various sectors, including education, parks, emergency responders, and veterans’ health services.
