Lottery Winner’s $50K Windfall Unleashes Dog Trust Fund Drama, Ends Relationship
Winner’s joke about splitting winnings with boyfriend’s dog leads to serious dispute and breakup

What do you get when you snag a $50,000 lottery windfall and a significant other who is perhaps a little too enamored with their golden retriever?
Well, if one anonymous Reddit poster is to be believed, what you get is a relationship that has — sorry — gone to the dogs.
On the Reddit “Am I The A——” subreddit, a 26-year-old woman claimed to have won a $50,000 lottery jackpot. She goes on to say that she used to tell her boyfriend that if she ever won money in the lottery, she’d split it three ways — her share, his share, and his dog Baxter’s share.
Well, she won, and he came knocking for Baxter.
“My boyfriend is now dead serious about wanting me to give ‘Baxter’s share’ of the money,” she wrote. “He insists I promised, and that Baxter deserves $10k in a ‘dog trust fund’ for future vet bills, toys, and ‘whatever he needs.’ I told him that’s ridiculous, Baxter’s a dog and doesn’t need a trust fund.”
She even insisted that she did buy Baxter some nice treats and a “fancy” dog bed, but the boyfriend said it wasn’t good enough, and threatened to call a lawyer.
Barking up the wrong tree
As one might imagine, this did not end well, as our lucky lottery winner confronted her boyfriend, telling him “straight up that while I love Baxter, giving $10k to a dog is beyond ridiculous, and I can’t believe it’s turned into such a major issue in our relationship.”
He then said she broke the relationship trust, she said that’s nuts, he said if I can’t trust you on this, how can I trust you on anything, and she…
“I just couldn’t take it anymore,” she wrote. “I told him that this whole situation has raised huge red flags, and after two years together, I can’t believe he’s acting like this. I told him flat out that we’re ending our relationship because his priorities seem completely out of whack. If he’s this unreasonable over something so absurd, I can’t imagine dealing with more serious issues down the road.”
So: Is she the a——?
All the commenters are firmly on her side.
“I would not give ANYTHING to this [guy] after that stupid manipulation he tried to pull to get more money from you gurl, tell him and his dog to pound sand, I beg of you,” wrote Left_Science2483.
“You’re not the a—— for refusing to set up a trust fund for a dog, especially since you see the original promise as a joke,” noted Ok-Sign-6417. “While it’s great that you care for Baxter and even spent some of your winnings on him, your boyfriend’s insistence on taking this seriously and labeling you as selfish seems excessive.”
“Break up and get your own dog to give it to,” chimed in texastica.
While we here at Lottery Geeks cannot speak to what has happened since the breakup, we are confident in saying that Baxter was, and remains, a very good boy, yes he is.
