The state motto of New Jersey is “Liberty and Prosperity.” For at least two of the state’s 9.3 million residents, the “prosperity” part is ringing very true in 2024.
Following on the heels of a massive $1.13 billion Mega Millions win in the Garden State in March, another New Jerseyan hit it big Monday night, going a perfect 6-for-6 in Powerball to claim a $223 million jackpot.
That prize slightly exceeded the previous Powerball grand prize score, when a Florida lottery player won $215 million on May 6.
As of press time Tuesday morning, there were no further details on where in New Jersey the latest winning ticket was sold.
One big winner, no runners-up
Monday’s winning numbers were 3, 10, 33, 58, and 59, with a red Powerball of 9.
Aside from the jackpot winner — who can either collect $223 million as an annuity or take a lump-sum pre-tax cash payment of $104.7 million — there were no other major scores. Not a single ticket sold paired the five white balls without the red Powerball.
Lottery Geeks estimates about 10.6 million tickets were sold for Monday’s draw.
The win ends a modest run of 14 straight Powerball draws without a jackpot hit, and the grand prize now resets to $20 million for Wednesday’s drawing.
The jackpot value of Mega Millions isn’t much better. After a $552 million win for an anonymous player in Illinois one week ago, that jackpot reset as well and now sits at a mere $30 million for the Tuesday night draw.
Tickets for either draw lottery cost $2, with an option in some states to play the multiplier for an extra $1.
The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. For Powerball, the grand prize odds are 1 in 292,201,338.
Both Powerball and Mega Millions are available in every state except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah. Mega Millions tickets can also be purchased in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, while Powerball is available in both of those jurisdictions plus Puerto Rico.
