Welcome to this week’s “Lotto Matrix,” a weekly Friday compilation of the lottery industry’s most significant, interesting, or absurd happenings.
Gift responsibly campaign sets a new record
With the holiday season upon us, the 2024 Gift Responsibly Campaign, led by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and supported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL), is making waves. This year, 74 lotteries and 101 community organizations from around the world have joined forces to deliver a critical message: lottery tickets are never appropriate gifts for children.
“This year’s record participation is a heartwarming way to enter the holiday season as we continue our work to educate the public about the dangers of underage gambling,” said Keith Whyte, NCPG executive director.
Research underscores the risks associated with early exposure to gambling. Studies reveal that individuals exposed to gambling during childhood, often through lottery products gifted by well-meaning adults, are more likely to develop gambling problems later in life.
According to the NCPG, products like lottery tickets and scratchers, perceived as harmless fun, can unintentionally introduce young people to gambling behaviors with long-term consequences.
Throughout November and December, participating organizations are amplifying awareness around this issue by engaging their local communities. Through public service announcements and other campaigns, these organizations emphasize the importance of promoting responsible gambling practices. The campaign’s message is clear: gambling is an activity reserved for adults, and safeguarding young people from early exposure is vital.
The campaign’s global reach continues to grow. For the seventh consecutive year, every eligible U.S. and Canadian lottery has committed to the initiative, joined by 19 international lotteries and numerous community groups. The program is also endorsed by the World Lottery Association and the European Lotteries.
Scratching his way to $1 million
A resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, is starting a new chapter of his life after a $1 million win in the 500X THE CASH scratch-off game. The Florida Lottery reports that Walter Sheard, who bought the winning ticket at a Publix in Jacksonville, claimed his prize as a lump-sum payment of $640,000, deciding it’s better to take the cash and begin celebrating.
The 500X THE CASH game, known for its $25 million top prize β the largest ever offered on a Florida scratcher β continues to attract players across the state. With over $1.66 billion in cash prizes and odds of winning at 1-in-4.23, it offers a unique opportunity for lottery enthusiasts to dream big.
Scratch-off games account for 74% of the Florida Lottery’s ticket sales and have contributed significantly to the state’s Educational Enhancement Trust Fund. To date, scratch-offs have generated over $19.5 billion for the fund, awarded $64.3 billion in prizes, and created more than 2,230 millionaires, according to the Florida Lottery.
Disbelief and shock
A routine Powerball purchase turned into an unforgettable moment for Linda Wilkes of Roaring River, North Carolina. Her $50,000 win unexpectedly multiplied tenfold to $500,000.
Wilkes, who bought her ticket online for the Nov. 4 Powerball drawing, made a decision to add the Power Play option for just an extra dollar. That small choice proved pivotal.
By matching four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, her $50,000 win was boosted by the game’s 10X multiplier, securing her the larger prize.
“I was in disbelief,” Wilkes told the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Wilkes claimed her prize at the North Carolina Lottery headquarters in Raleigh, where she walked away with $357,501 after taxes. Reflecting on her win, she shared, “Everybody always says, ‘What if I won the lottery, that would open a lot of doors.’ And then I did.”
The estimated jackpot for the Dec. 14 Powerball draw is now $45 million after no one hit the jackpot on Dec. 11.
Connecticut holiday toy drive
The Connecticut Lottery Corporation (CLC) is bringing holiday cheer to children and families in need with their annual “Give a Child a Toy, Not a Ticket” Holiday Toy Drive. Running through Jan. 3, 2025, the initiative, now in its 11th year, underscores the importance of giving thoughtfully during the holiday season.
Toys collected through the drive will be delivered to Yale New Haven’s Toy Closet, which provides toys to children receiving care at the facility throughout the year. According to the CLC, these toys play a vital role in helping to distract, motivate, and comfort young patients during their hospital visits.
Anyone can participate in the drive by dropping off donations at Yale New Haven Hospital. To schedule a drop-off, donors can call 203-688-5717. Alternatively, toys can be purchased from a list of recommended toys for shipment directly to the Toy Closet. The program also accepts monetary contributions.
Over the years, according to the CLC, it has donated more than 30,000 toys to various initiatives.
