Welcome to this week’s “Lotto Matrix,” a weekly Friday compilation of the lottery industry’s most significant, interesting, or absurd happenings.
Overdue but worth the wait
An Orange County, California, man has finally received his $44 million lottery jackpot winnings after an unexpectedly long wait. The winner, Jerry, purchased the winning Powerball ticket at a Ralphs store in Dana Point for the August 19 drawing. Weeks after the win, he became concerned about the delay in receiving his prize and contacted a local media outlet for help.
State officials explained that the delay was part of the standard verification process, which includes checks for outstanding debts such as back taxes or child support. While this process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, it can occasionally extend longer. In Jerry’s case, it took nearly 12 weeks before the funds were released.
About two weeks ago, Jerry received his payout, which amounted to nearly $17 million after opting for the lump-sum payment and accounting for taxes. Despite the stressful waiting period, Jerry expressed relief and gratitude, saying he feels fortunate to be a millionaire for the rest of his life.
With his winnings, Jerry has already paid off his home, made improvements, invested in his future, and shared a portion with family members. However, he remains frustrated by the length of time it took to receive his prize and hopes other lottery winners won’t face similar delays in the future.
Props for the Texas Lottery Commission
The Texas Lottery Commission has been recognized as one of the top workplaces in the Greater Austin area, earning the Top Workplaces 2024 award from the Austin American-Statesman. This honor is based on employee feedback collected through a survey conducted by Energage.
The commission expressed pride in receiving this recognition, with Executive Director Ryan Mindell noting that the award reflects the agency’s dedication to making a positive impact on public education, veterans, and charitable organizations across Texas. The survey evaluated employee experiences in areas such as respect, support, opportunities for growth, and empowerment in their roles.
Energage CEO Eric Rubino highlighted that the award is particularly meaningful because it is rooted in genuine feedback from employees. He added that being named a Top Workplace serves as a mark of distinction for organizations committed to fostering a positive work environment.
In Fiscal Year 2024, the commission reported its second-highest sales and revenue figures, achieving $8.39 billion in sales and contributing over $2 billion to state initiatives, including public education and veterans’ services.
Million-dollar overtime in California
A Walmart employee in City of Industry, Los Angeles County, California, became a millionaire after purchasing a winning Scratchers lottery ticket, as announced by the California Lottery. The win came as an unexpected bonus following extra work at her job.
On September 2, Labor Day, Rebeca Gonzalez was called in by her employer to work a brief three-hour shift, even though she had planned to spend the day barbecuing with her family. After completing her shift, Gonzalez remembered she had intended to buy a lottery ticket during her break but had forgotten due to the pace of the day.
As she was leaving, she decided to stop by a California Lottery vending machine and purchased a $10 Single Double Triple Scratchers ticket. This ticket turned out to be the top prize winner of $1 million.
She told the Lottery that she has no immediate plans to leave her job at Walmart. In addition, until now, Gonzalez had only shared the news with the manager who requested her to work on the holiday.
Michigan scratch-off turns into gold
Unlike Gonzalez, a woman from Oakland County, Michigan, is excited about leaving her job and taking some time off after winning a $2 million prize from the Michigan Lottery’s Ace of Spades instant game.
The 47-year-old anonymous winner shared that she regularly purchases lottery tickets with the hope of hitting the jackpot. When she scratched off her Ace of Spades ticket and realized that she had won, she was overwhelmed with joy and immediately called her mother to share the incredible news.
After the win set in, the new millionaire visited the Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim her prize. She plans to quit her job and take a vacation before saving the remainder of her winnings.
In other Michigan Lottery news, the last major jackpot winners were the Breakfast Club lottery group, who claimed an $842 million Mega Millions prize in June 2024. They plan to use their winnings to buy a home in Florida and travel.
